Within milliseconds an arc flash can reach temperatures four times hotter than the surface of the sun. Single phase arcs can propagate into three-phase arcs. An arc flash lasts until an overcurrent protective device opens the current and can cause grave injury and even death to electrical workers. Industry sources estimate that 5-10 arc flash incidents occur each day.
