Lighting ballasts

By Andrew Douglas Pitonyak

After spending an hour researching part numbers on old fluorescent ballasts to determine if they were magnetic, I remembered that I could simply check the frequency of the output using my new Fluke 189 Digital Multimeter. I was able to quickly separate the magnetic ballasts from the electronic ballasts by measuring the output frequency. A magnetic ballast has an output frequency of 80 Hz; electronic ballasts are in the megahertz.
